Every second Thursday of the month, we organize lectures around the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. Our guest speakers are academic experts and entrepreneurs working in the field of the SDGs. They discuss root causes, challenges, relevant theories and important stakeholders. But foremost, they talk about the role of innovation and entrepreneurship, if we want to reach the goals by 2030.
So join us, go back to school and immerse yourself in knowledge for sustainability!
SDG 5: GENDER EQUALITY
In many developing countries, large parts of the population – including women - have limited access to financial services. According to the World Bank, over 1 billion women still do not use or have access to finance and over 70% of women-owned small and medium enterprises have inadequate or no access to financial services, resulting in difficulties in collecting and saving (family) income, growing their businesses, and excluding women from the formal economy. Our first guest speaker Luz Martinez, economist and senior advisor Inclusive Finance & Gender at KIT Royal Tropical Institute, will deep dive into SDG 5: Gender Equality, and share insights on the relation between women and finance and her recent research on women entrepreneurs in the MENA region.
The second guest speaker, translating theory to practice and showing the role of entrepreneurship in achieving SDG 5, is 100WEEKS. 100WEEKS believes that women themselves know best what they need to stand on their own feet within weeks. This micro-giving platform empowers and supports entrepreneurship amongst women who need it most, alleviating their families from poverty. Learn more about the concepts of micro-giving, ‘mobile money’ and the revolutionary approach of donating cash directly in this Entrepreneurship College on SDG 5 – Gender Equality!
